Very strange this... the hotel that I paid money to stay in was more derelict than this derelict hotel. Hmmm strange indeed.
Anyways well known this one, it has appeared in the Mirror, the Irish Sun, and other newspapers; but we were just a few miles away and fancied an upgrade from the hotel that I paid money to stay in.
HISTORY
The 32 room Ostan Ghaoth Dobhair hotel in Bunbeg was built in 1970 but closed its doors and was put up for auction in 2015 after a fall in tourists visiting the area. Allegedly it was popular with the footballer George Best. It is currently part of a multi-million Euro development plan which will see it redeveloped into a leisure complex. It nows features in many newspaper articles where urban explorers are said to be in "awe" and "mesmerised" at the eerieness of it all. Features also on many YouTube and TikTok videos with view counts in excess of 300000. Would seem this hotel is now more popular with visitors than when it was open.
REPORT
Reception lobby
Menu shows this hotel had not actually been closed that long
On the same level, the restuarant
This may look minging but this restaurant still holds a 5 star hygiene rating that is better than the take-away around the corner from my house
And the view to the beach
Next door was the bar area, still looking more fresh and appealing than my local Wetherspoons
This was lying on the ground. Now given George Best is allegedly said to have said that this was his favourite hotel, the cynic in means suggests too much coincidence that this just happened to be on top of a pile of paperwork. In plain English this is called a GoonTube prop.
Upstairs to the bedrooms
And this is what we came for. After spending two nights in that hotel I had booked online and paid good money for, it was nice to find this upgrade to something a bit more comfortable
We felt like millionaires moving into here after the horrors of the other hotel
Finally downstairs at the lowest level was the entertainment room
Smiling because we had got out of that other hotel and into something nicer
