Another of the Franco Prussian forts around Belfort (1887). A bit of thought to get in this one but is obvious when you get close. It had a garrison of just under 600 soldiers including officers. Two large powder magazines. It has three single counterscarp galleries each armed with a single 40mm revolving 5 barrel machine gun and a 120mm gun and a double counterscarp gallery armed with two 40mm machine guns and 2 120mm guns to defend the moat. The entrance was defended by two defence coffre each armed with a 40mm revolving machine gun. There are loads of artillery batteries close by and a cave shelter for troops and powder (still to visit those yet).
There is one swing drawbridge and a side sliding bridge from the moat entrance.
We only did about a third of the fort so will need to revisit.
Interesting entrance
In the moat passing under the bridge and drawbridge structure, heading to the Sally port in the background this had a bridge over a wide wet ditch and iron doors.
The side sliding drawbridge retracts into the next room by a winch, big hole beneath the drawbridge.
One of the 75mm gun casemates
The bakery
the washrooms on the way to the Saillant 5
Machine gun turret emplacement
Steps down to the tunnel to the counterscarp 'Saillent 5'
Tunnel to the Counterscarp
Firing gallery in the counterscarp
Entrance to the tunnel for Saillant 4
In the courtyard of the wartime barracks with washing sinks in the centre
Washing sinks in the courtyard
Wartime barracks
Tunnel to Saillant 2
Looking back to the entrance bridge
The entrance with railway
Peace time barracks, overlooking the moat
A second entrance from the moat on the lower level
Defence block for the front of the fort, from the moat
Counterscarp gallery 'Saillant 2' from outside the fort
