OVERSTONE HALL, NORTHAMPTONSHIRE, cc2023

HISTORY

Overstone Hall was designed by architect William Milford Teulon, in the early cc1960s for the first Baron Overstone and Lady Overstone. It was built in a French Renaissance style.

The building had 119 rooms, and is surrounded by 35 acres of parkland and grounds.

The Baron Overstone is said to have not been a fan of the building and never actually lived in the building. Instead it was used as a Girls Boarding School from the cc1920s until around cc1929.

As well as once being used as a school - the structure has also been the HQ of a Pentecostal Church.

A majority of the building was destroyed by a fire in the April of cc2001. The surviving areas were then used as a retirement home from cc2008 until cc2014.

The building was again targetted by arsonist when another fire broke out in cc2019.

Its a grade 2 listed building and has gradually fallen into ruin over the years lack of funds lead to its demise.

The building went up for sale with an asking price of 1 Million GBP. but there has been little or no interest as the cost of repairs are deemed too great.

Now, in cc2023 it looks unlikely that the building will be saved - however its runored that it will be restored to its former glory - but when and by whom ? is unknown.

THE EXPLORE

Chris and I went to take our daughters to a permissioned explore of a nearby RAF Base. However due to a break down in communication with the event organiser that trip failed to happen instead we drove around for a while and looked for anything old and abandoned.

After an hour or so and a hundred miles or so later, we stumbled across Overstone Hall. The girls stroked some horses behind the nearby church before setting off to the Hall.

We were unsure if we'd find a pile of rubble or whether the explore would be possible.

Upon arriving - the building no matter how obvious the decay still had a majestic feel to it and we were keen to take a look around.

We walked all around it first and assessed how safe / unsafe it was after researching it and hearing about the arson attacks etc.

It wasnt long before we ventured inside, and so the explore began. Whilst not well preserved at all the rooms and hallways had interesting architecture and high ceilings.

The upper floors were pretty unsafe. We chose not to walk in certain areas as those were too far gone. Wethering, damp and rott......and the fires had made the upper floors quite unsafe to walk upon.

CONCLUSION

More than 600 formal objection in cc2023 have been submitted against plans to now demolish the dilapidated former 1800s stately home.

The owner 'Barry Howard Homes' has applied to West Northamptonshire Council to KNOCK DOWN the Grade 2 Listed Building.

Historic England has also submitted their objections saying QUOTE : It's preservation SHOULD be looked at.

Its been stated that the building is in a perilous condition and its inviable to restore it.

Two applications have been submitted, one for the demolition and the other to change a Listed Building.

Heritage charities 'The Victorian Society' and 'Historic Buildings and Places' as well as 'Overstone Parish Council' have opposed the demolition.

West Northamptonshire Council has yet to make a decision on the application.

Nicely covered.
Pretty sure this was Barry Howard's plan all along, the refurbishment costs always far exceeded anything that could b made in profit from apartment sales.
I hope they do refuse demolitions & force them to make repairs
