April 2024
Whilst visiting the Steel City for last years 28DL meet-up, I found myself staying in Sheffield's OYO Metropolitan hotel, the building is a bland ten-storey concrete tower block located near to the Victoria Quays. Not long after checking in I found myself ascending the stairs to the top floor to have a look at what the roof access was like. It quickly became apparent that the hotel didn't have much regard for locking doors and not only did I find myself on the roof, but also a maintenance room and the lift motor room. I had a quick look round but was due to meet up with some others for some pre-meet shenanigans in the city. After returning to the hotel that evening, I again made my way up the stairs, this time accompanied by my camera and tripod. I worked my way round snapping a few night shots of the city before returning to my room for the night. The next day, I woke up early and went up for a third time to take a few daytime shots of the Sheffield skyline before venturing down to the restaurant for my complimentary breakfast. Unsurprisingly, there is very little history available online about this building, It looks to have been constructed at some point in the 1990s and consists of 112 bedrooms. The hotel was acquired by OYO in 2019 and is currently their largest hotel in the UK.
