Built between 1891 & 1895 by the Refuge Assurance company,
designed by Alfred Waterman.
opened in 1895 as the Refuge Assurance building,
increased between 1910 & 1912 with a 217 ft tower designed by Paul Waterman,
then again in 1932 by Stanley Birket.
The Refuge Assurance company left the building on Fri 6th November 1987.
Bought by Richard Newman in 1996 at a cost of £7 Million,
converted to a hotel, now owned by the Principal Hayley group.
The hotel is grade 2* listed.
The outside consists of red brick & Terrocotta facade,
while the inside consists of burmantofts faience with a grand ballroom.
