Its great when old heads get back on it, especially when they call you out to investigate some decent new stuff, and after a long hiatus, Over had chanced upon a massive drop shaft in the middle of Preston and fancied having a look-see with my good self and bigjobs.

As it turns out, United Utilities have been beavering away constructing a huge storm surge system to save the river Ribble from truck loads of sewage every time it rains. It consists of 4 or 5 main storm surge tanks connected by 3 miles of 3.05m concrete pipes that converge on the main pumping station south of the river (similar to the GCANS system in Tokyo, just smaller):

We've unfortunately missed the TBMs but the results of their labour is rather impressive.

Decent nights drain inspection. Will probably pop back when its done to have a look at the pumping hall when its fully kitted out.

PCANS, like GCANS, but err, in Preston.....
