The development of the peat industry in Estonia began in the 1930s. A railway line and an entire town were also built especially for the plant's employees. The factory has been expanded over the years. Between 800 and almost 1,500 people lived in the town. The plant was closed in 2011 after over 70 years of peat briquette production.
