So, the plan for this trip was to have a quick look at Karlshagen which was the town where the officers and scientists were quartered during WW2 and the site of an NVA base during the cold war. Then a tramp through the woods up near the main area of Peenemunde, around the area where the laboratories and scientific buildings used to be before they were destroyed by the Soviets after the war. Then finally a trip to the old Oxygen production plant in the centre of Peenemunde village.
Karlshagen
What looks to be old vehicle and tank sheds, mostly used by the locals for storage.
Nearby what looks to be a headquarters building
Went around to the other side near the railway line where the main entrance is located.
Lots of tourists around so decided to head off to the main Peenemunde site and see what the NVA had built there after the war.
Peenemunde - Woods
In retrospect, I think you could spend weeks wandering around Peenemunde and still not see everything
Looks to be a guard house.
Lots of hardened bunkers in the woods.
Haven’t a clue what this is…
Lots of interior fences around as can be seen in the next report.
Then in one building a case for a rocket motor, glad to see it hadn’t been carted off by a local and stuck on eBay.
Peenemunde – Oxygen Plant
The Oxygen production plant is right in the centre of Peenemunde village, but even in June it’s relatively quiet. Lots of signs saying no entry, but there is an unmade road down the side to some garages and on the way down you can see where the fence has collapsed due to the overgrown trees.
It does look as though some of the lower levels are used by locals for storage, but it is in a bad state of repair and there are lots of holes in the concrete floor some purpose made and some not.
