in the small village of Pentlow just outside of Braintree Essex stands the Pentlow tower also known as Bull's Tower

In the garden of the Rectory at Pentlow stands a 95ft tower was erected in 1859 by a former incumbent of Pentlow, Rev. Edward Bull, in memory of his parents Rev John and Mrs Margaret Bull “on a spot that they loved so well” The tower underwent some restoration work in 2006.
It is an octagonal structure of red brick with designs in black. Windows in the sides light the oak 114 steps spiral staircase

the explore
spotted this a few months back on my way to price up a job
finally found some spare time over the Christmas break to get a few things ticked off my list so a couple of us headed down to check this out as its only 30min away

was easy to get to and out of sight this stands in the middle of a forest behind a large house by the look of thing the house is used as a weeding venue

only down side was surrounded by large trees so is hard to photograph the outside and battling early morning low sun

after climbing the spiral stairs that were getting more and more rotten the higher we got finally got to the top the view was great apart from the phone masts could see over miles of countryside all around

doing some research on google apparently this was used as a lookout tower in world war two

enjoy the pics

Very strangely, I actually know the person who lives in that house and owns pentlow tower.
New to the site, so far getting great ideas for photography. Just wondering, are they ok with people visiting and taking pictures of the tower?

Stunning tower. So was this just open? I love the detail on this place. It does remind me of the tower at Stone house hospital . Nice set of photos there. Nice find. :thumb:thumb

I did think it was in someone's garden, but the report didn't say permission visit. So I just wondered. Agreed, re goons. Damage for the sake of ruin, I will never understand. I look, take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footprints and that is all. So a goon I am most definitely not!

Never really implied you or the OP was a ‘goon’, but I wouldn’t want a bunch of clowns in my back garden on a Sunday afternoon filming and taking photos while I’m trying to have a bbq- no what I mean

Yep I know what you mean, I wasn't being serious about being a goon. I totally got ya. Agreed re back garden. I used to live in a manor house, which had a flint walkway encircling the whole estate. And a Folly in the corner. The wall walk way was high above our garden and many a person would climb from outside onto it to be nosey. Not good when your sunbathing or swimming lol. So yep got ya 100% Gabe :thumb
