Although I knew it would be nothing spectacular I’ve been wanting to see inside here for years, partly because I pass it at least three times per week, and partly because I’ve never seen any photos from inside and don’t like not knowing…
There’s very little online about the history of this place. It was a council owned play resources centre which, judging from a soggy calendar left inside, closed down in 2007. Although I couldn’t find anything to confirm online I’d speculate that it probably closed due to the flood in June that year as this part of town was quite badly affected. The lack of ground floor carpet and mop buckets scattered about would also seem to confirm this. This photo from 2009 shows the building and the pub next door, both seemingly derelict. (The pub was recently demolished.)
Some notices pinned up in the window suggests that the centre was a source of resources for a range of clients, including cub and scout leaders and after-school clubs.
Prior to this, a partial old photo I found online suggests that this was previously a ‘health education centre’ in the 1980s. However, the layout and design of parts of the building also has the feel of some of the old workshops I’ve been in in Sheffield and I suspect it was used for other purposes before this time...
The building is currently privately owned – this article from last year outlines some kind of land swap plan to enable development of the site: https://www.thestar.co.uk/business/...-development-on-sheffield-pub-sites-1-8515842
