This site has always been a source of great curiosity for me - my family come from the Village and used the train terminal at this site to get from Manchester into the deepest corners of Wales way back in the 60s.
Having seen it in passing on multiple occasions, I took a wander inside, tentatively, as I was Ill-equipped for the walls of asbestos around me.
The History
One of four such establishments opened in 1937 by the milk marketing board, originally as a depot for collecting milk from local farms and then loading them onto trains running the Manchester-Milford Railway line. In the first few years, they established butter and powdered milk manufacturing facilities.
The railway line was open to passengers from Aberystwyth to the villages surrounding Pont Llanio. This service ended in 1965, the Creamery itself closing in 1970.
It’s currently owned by a local farmer who uses some of the sheds for storing hay and farm equipment but otherwise it is free from any great quantity of graffiti and remains in respectable condition.
The Photos
Approaching from the gate - offloading bay, often mistaken (understandably) as the platform for the rail line, this however runs parallel to the left of this photo.
Nature taking this one back beautifully
Quite an imposing lump of grey when you stand below it.
Presumably the processing area for the incoming and outgoing milk
With the tracks all but overgrown, this water tower is the last suggestion of a rail line when looking over the bridge
Archive photo - Class 35(?)
Bonus content - most of a Daihatsu Taft
Cheers, Jonesy
