This one had been at the top of my lift for as long as I can remember. Everyone local had gazed at this huge structure which dominates the town’s skyline. Being central in the grounds of a live hospital it was one we had never really given much thought to.
As I began to top more high spots around the UK I became more and more interested with hitting up some of our local heights and viewing my home town from a different angle. We had looked at some rooftops in the area but nothing came close to the height of the hospital chimney.
The plan was set so after a few nights of planning and some help from a friend we decided when and how this would be done. As always things didn’t go completely to plan and we ended up hiding behind a ridiculously low wall while hospital porters stood outside a building next door where an alarm had been triggered...We never did find out what had caused it. We remained hidden for some time while security attended the building and silenced the alarm.
With one last look around for cameras and anyone that may question our presence in the hospital site we decided it was now or never and so quickly gained entry and began our ascent.
A Bit of information about the hospital...
The Queen Elizabeth Queen Mother Hospital, Margate is an acute hospital with 388 beds (as of March 2012), providing a range of emergency and elective services and comprehensive trauma, orthopedic, obstetrics, general surgery and pediatric services. The hospital dates back to the 1930s when the original building was constructed. Between 1996 and 1998 most services were relocated and expanded into a new main hospital building linked to the original facilities.
The hospital has a specialist centre for gynecological cancer and modern operating theatres, Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU) facilities, children’s inpatient and outpatient facilities, a new Cardiac Catheter Laboratory and Cancer Unit. New staff accommodation provides a mix of single, couple and family accommodation.
In March 2008 the Trust purchased the company that owned and ran the 22 bed private hospital (the Spencer Wing), which sits in the grounds of QEQM Margate Hospital. The Spencer Wing carries out work for the Trust and has helped the organization to reduce and maintain its waiting times.
QEQM has a post graduate teaching centre and staff accommodation. On site there are also co-located adult and elderly mental health facilities run by the Kent & Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust.
This was by far the best view Margate had to offer although the whole time we were up there we were on watch for hospital staff looking up as they sat opposite in their smoking area. With no problems we got our photos then got out of the grounds as quick as we could.
