Right, after much wanting to visit this place since I found out about it being closed and doing a little research, we called past today on our way back from visiting relatives down south. Usefully enough I had the foresight to take camera etc with us!
Was easy to find, gps to llanbedr and then left in the village (signposted airfield duh!), first impressions were of somewhere very tightly locked up, but as with these bases, the backdoor is usually the one least watched
Got in, very cautious as there are signs everywhere advicing you not to enter, and that there are 24hr on site security. Realising this, we kept a reasonably low profile and avoided the lower end of the site until we felt a bit safer.
So we had a mooch round the top end, checking out the runways and little side buildings. I wanted to go to the control tower but looked a good walk away, again save that for next time!
Quite an eery place in all, shame to see it so deserted, wish I could find out more history. Also sad to see the jindyviks got crushed at least the gate guard survives (although not on the gate...)
Flash Earth Link:
Zoom Earth | LIVE weather map, storm tracker, rain radar
Some pictures from when it was active
Webshots - Desktop Wallpaper / Screen Savers
Anyway, on with the pictures, I apologise that some are wonky, trying to get used to the new camera and the images are a little big sorry. My mistake :tumbleweed
The older of the hangars, obviously a bit unsafe
Poor tool control. Shameful
Traffic lights, never to be lit again?
The two main hangars
Now defunct RWY 16
Marker Lights
They did..
Old wiring to the mast
Water leak at the fire station. Couldnt be stopped
Fire station all boarded up
Swan!
Looks like they kicked the old lights out of the way
RWY18, the long bugger!
The mast, I did attempt a climb but I was not equipped for it
MT I think
The remaining Jindyvik, also I suspect its the old gate guard as there is a pole attachment on the underside..
