Ive been doing a lot of solo explores recently of old RAF sites in and around Essex, Suffolk etc. So I saw a few posts on here about Warboys when doing some research for sites in those areas so popped along one saturday. I had marked off some points of interest on my map and set off over the airfield only to find what buildings there were on there were now used for agricultural storage though I did find a rather nice old plough wagon from 1935.

Once I was off the airfield I went along to another building I’d marked off and discovered it was a current communications building. However, I needed to find a bush 😂 and noticed the building I marked was separate from the communication building and that if I shimmied sideways for a bit through some brambles between two spiked fences, I could get on the site I wanted. So that’s what I did.

I love the old RAF buildings so wasn’t disappointed here. Stupidly I didn’t realise about the old medical buildings down the road, thus proving my research was a bit shit and had to return there another day.

History -

I won’t do the whole Warboys history just what I’ve managed to find about this particular site.

The remains of the Ground Control Interceptor (GCI) Radar

Whilst its use and history is somewhat difficult to locate or verify, it is known that this was a Ground Control Interceptor (GCI) Radar Station used to lock fighters onto incoming enemy aircraft. Later, there was a high-powered transmitter here used by RAF Mildenhall and RAF Wyton. It was also used to communicate with the V bombers on long-range flights. The mast believed to be original, has been updated and refurbished for telecommunications purposes, but the block house remains.

I thought this building was long gone. Nice mushroom pillboxes at Warboys as well. And the old medical buildings.
