4th on my SSI redundant sites list
1st being South Bank Coke Ovens & 2nd being Lackenby Steel Works.
I never had much interest in this,
as I thought it would be identical too its sister coke ovens 2 miles away.
I was surprised too find they werent identical,
even though there were similarities inc the gasometers and ovens.
This wasnt pre planned no google searches or recees,
it was a spur of the moment thing while searching for something else.
I walked at least 2 miles across industrial & no mans land too reach here,
too find access too the conveyors sealed with corrugated.
Managing too access via the sinter works, which now has no electricity.
Once I entered the miles of conveyors it was like a maze,
because there sealed at the mid way point with corrugated.
Even though I did manage too slip through some via a gap in the middle of the conveyor belt,
but it wasnt long before this became impassable, so had too return too the drawing board.
The conveyors are absolutely filthy with coal dust & particles everywhere.
Once I eventually exited the miles of conveyors I notice the coke ovens,
which I immediately thought oh.
Abit eerie as there wasnt anybody about,
except secca doing there 15 - 45 mins random rounds of the perimiter.
Stripping of the equipment was evident, with piles of steel & debris lying about.
Once I finished the coke ovens, the blast furnace (my original target) was a stones throw away
but with it being dark, having too catch a train
& knowing I had too do the whole conveyors industrial & no mans land thing all again.
I decided not too bother & head off.
Must of walk at least 4 miles in those bloody conveyors, but well worth the effort though,
Redcar Coke Ovens, Redcar by stranton
opened in 1978 by Gibbons Wilputte for British Steel,
consists of 88 ovens split into two batteries of 44, each 5 metres high.
Became Corus in 1998 - 99.
Then Tata in 2007 & SSI in 2012, The latter went bankrupt in October 2015 & closed the site.
Which included the Coke Ovens, Steel Works & Sinter Works.
