this was a solo mission on a sunny sunday afternoon, a reasonable drive from sussex to kent later i was at the site,
The station opened in 1962, originally burning coal from the Kent coalfield. It was converted to burn oil in 1971. In 1989 it was converted to burn Orimulsion imported through Port Richborough. After growing concerns over the environmental effects of the fuel, leading to court cases the 360MW station ceased generating in 1996.
Permission for an experimental 1MW wind turbine at the site was given in 1987. There are plans to link the offshore Thanet Wind Farm to the existing grid station at the power station site.
The power station can be seen in several scenes of the 2008 film Son of Rambow, and was the location for the 2003 Channel 4 television series Full Metal Challenge.
met 3 university students on the site who were taking pics for their degree and had no idea how stay quite lol.
so on with the pics
the old workshop
the turbine hall
looking up at the office windows from the end of the turbine hall
view up the stair well in the main office building there were obvious signs of airsoft games going on here at some point.
the cooling towers and chimney taken from the roof of the office building
all in all was a rather good day took hundreds of photos a return visit is a must only this time with a torch to explore the dark areas of the buidling
