I had seen some good reports of this CSO, so I decided to check it out for myself. Access was gained via the 4' brick outfall to the Croal.
About 8 metres in, the pipe becomes RCP and after another 8 metres or so we arrive at the first chamber.
Straight ahead is a small gap - which we shall return to later - and to the left is a concrete staircase which leads to a higher level within the circular chamber.
On reaching the level above we find a wider length of RCP, and a small brick CSO.
This small CSO was the source of bad air within the chamber, however a few metres into the RCP the air quality improved.
This tunnel stretches on for a while as it passes beneath a canal. On reaching the end we come to a spiral staircase.
At the top of the spiral staircase is a large circular chamber.
At this higher level we come to another RCP entrance...
...leading to an inspection chamber...
...and then to the screening chamber.
Returning to the first chamber from the outfall, there is a small gap straight ahead as seen when entering. Beyond this is an older brick tunnel.
This eventually leads to a stone tunnel, the roof of which becomes lower whilst the mud below gets deeper. This was as far as I came down here before heading back to the outfall.
