Royal Mail
Nothing too exciting, but a place locals will remember from not too long ago and something I'd been looking at every time I traveled past. Absolutely mint inside and to be honest I found it quite interesting to look around. Spent many a trip up here in search of a lost package containing something interesting I'd found on eBay a week previous, quite a local landmark in some sense. At this moment the place only half exists and a flock of diggers are chomping their way through it to make way for a new Waitrose and a Mosque.
I'd checked this a few times and managed to exploit a route previously created by metal thieves to achieve access. I can imagine the place was trashed shortly after.
Hope you enjoy and maybe a few locals can recognize a few features!
History and it's Future
I posted a lead up here somewhere when a few friends of mine received letters warning of the closure early last year. The 6th of September 2014 saw the closure of Royal Mail in Chelmsford and relocation to a new depot in East Chelmsford more capable of processing parcels. Nowadays people tend to use email instead of letter form and tend to order online as opposed to going on a shopping trip. This means that letter logistics are decreasing in demand whilst parcel logistics are continuing to grow in popularity. At present many different companies supply a courier service at much more competitive prices and Royal Mail aim to focus on providing a better service at a cheaper price.
The building was built in the 60's/70's when demand was high but unfortunately has stood the test of time and is now outdated and now stands in the way for expensive development opportunities within the London Commuter belt.
Demolition has begun and Waitrose is expected to open in 2017.
