History of Selborne Brickworks
Tower Brick & Tile Company Limited have been making handmade Selborne bricks and roof tiles at their site near Selborne since 1872. The company went into administration on 6th November 2009 and dissolved in August 2011.
Selborne Bricks are made using traditional methods from locally extruded clay (gault clay, some 60 million years old). They mixed the clay with about 10% sand. Each brick is handled at least 5 times during its manufacture, which allows minor
variations in shape and size that, in turn, means that each brick is slightly different. Walls that are made from Selborne Bricks are strong and long lasting and the bricks have been made on the site since Roman times.
Exploring Selborne Brickworks
Entry and exit was really easy, no interruptions and was there for about an hour. We did hear the dog next door bark for a little while but then it stopped. I have heard the neighbour isn’t very friendly and does come over occasionally but no one appeared. Parked directly outside the place. Could hear the odd car drive past so we were weary and heard a car slow right down as it went past but all was good.
There were stacks of bricks with the Selborne Stamps on them. There was a cabin which I imagine would have been an office space and lots of machinery throughout the place. I thought the graffiti on the wall amazing! We walked around outside for a bit and there's a skip on the land and other bits of machinery.
