“For whoever takes a stroll in the vicinity of the hospital on early spring days such as we have had this week, must instantly wonder if a hospital could have lovelier surroundings. Shire Hill, with its background of sweeping hills and rolling fields commands as fine a position as any hospital in the north.”
The origins of Shire Hill Hospital in the North Derbyshire town of Glossop can be traced back to 1837 when it opened as Glossop Union Workhouse. In 1897 the workhouse was extended and opened as Shire Hill View Infirmary. Due to overcrowding in the early 1920s a new adjacent wing was constructed, consisting of two pavilions over two storeys.
Fast-forwarding to the present, the hospital eventually closed in 2018 with services transferring to Tameside General. Currently there is planning pending for demolition of all the redundant hospital buildings – although this still seems to be up for debate, as the local heritage trust is asking councillors to reject it on the basis that it would result in the loss of a ‘significant non-designated heritage asset.’
On to the explore – this is one we’ve had on the list for a bit now, but most free time is currently being dedicated fannying around with places closer to home so it was put on the back burner. But after seeing the recent report by @Zoemilly I decided to get my arse into gear and have a look. The hospital is pretty empty and quite soggy but has a bit of character and some nice stained glass.

The ward names in stained glass over the doors was a nice touch
Physiotherapy - in such a tiny room!
Thanks for looking!
