3rd on my SSI redundant sites list,
1st being South Bank Coke Ovens & 2nd being Lackenby Steel Works.
Been wanting this for as long as I can remember,
always thought about it each time the train passed by,
but never felt comfortable attempting it while live.
Once I read about the official closure,
I began too plan an explore even though I didnt know the surroundings well.
Saying that the recee became the explore.
I walked at least 2 miles across industrial & no mans land too reach here,
well worth the effort though.
The site is vast with miles of conveyors, easy too get lost once your in them.
It was blowing a Hurricane, ( literally) difficult in parts too get about
so strong the corrugated was rattling & some of it torn off the sides of the conveyors.
the electricity is on, which wasnt a surprise.
Abit eerie as there wasnt anybody about,
even though the draft was howling through gaps & pipes.
The site is absolutly filthy with coal dust & particles everywhere, as expected.
This caused havoc with the lens of my camera, which continues too occur.
I will probably have too buy a new camera.
Sinter Works Redcar, by stranton
opened in 1978 by British steel,
became Corus in 1998 - 99.
Then Tata in 2007 & SSI in 2012, the latter went bankrupt in October 2015 & closed the site
which included the Coke Ovens & Steel Works too the west & Blast Furnace too the east.
Sinter Works with the Blast Furnace behind
conveyors
miles of conveyors
main conveyor too Blast Furnace
thanks
