The plan was actually to go somewhere else in town, but seeing as I was walking past the old Fish Market for the first time, I thought I'd give it a crack. As I got there late, I'm sure I must have missed parts, and didn't make it into the cold storage building that is joined to it.
A bit of history:
Built in 1888, Smithfield Fish Market sits as part of a triangular structure which also includes the Red House, completed in 1899.
The Red House was one of the first cold stores to be built outside the London docks, and continued to serve Smithfield Market until the mid-1970's.
Years after it closed its doors, the Fish Market is still sat, waiting to be either developed or knocked down. Various campaign groups seem to have won the battle so that the latter doesn't take place.
