1. The History
Located on Sheffield’s Attercliffe Road in S9, Spartan Works (formerly "Spartan Steel Alloys") first traded under the name of "Shipman's" before it was taken over by an American buyer. New owners, Spartan Steel Alloys Ltd had multiple branches across the UK. The steel was produced at Spartan's site in Birmingham and then transported up north to Sheffield to be rolled. In 1984, it was subject to a management buy-out and the workforce was subsequently cut by about 20%. Then, in December 1998, it was announced that the entire share capital of Spartan Sheffield Limited had been acquired by Firth Rixson. By 1999 they had moved the works over to Ecclesfield and made most people redundant. After that, different parts of the site served a variety of purposes over the years, from storage to offices for other companies, including, at one point, Pioneer Security Systems. Most of this space has actually sat empty since 2011.
Now the redevelopment of Spartan Works is in progress, supported by £17m of government Levelling Up funding. It will include some demolition, construction of new buildings (up to 14 storeys) and the conversion of existing industrial buildings. The plans include 362 new homes, commercial units, public space, car and cycle parking and a new footbridge over the Sheffield and Tinsley Canal.
2. The Explore
A few reports had started appearing on the site (cheers for the intel @tarkovsky ) so given this place was well known to me, thought I’d better go and check it out. So down I popped one very wet and dull morning. The way in was a bit round the houses but once in it was an easy enough explore. Looked at the rooms across the three floors but didn’t make it out back where the demo work was in progress. Nothing mind-blowing but some nice bits and bobs and and there was THAT wallpaper.
3. The Photographs
A few externals’ to start with.
Nice stonework:
And we’re in:
No one’s shifting that safe!
Think we’ll give that one a miss:
Old covered up fireplace:
Some very old PC gear:
And the clock stopped dead on 11:
Along the corridor:
A very scuzzy old kitchen:
The bathroom has seen better days too:
And down the stairs:
Loving that carpet pattern:
Nice stairs:
And on to THAT Wallpaper:
Can't get enough of it:
Health and safety:
This bit’s looking a bit rough:
Down to the basement we go:
Not too much of interest down here to be honest:
And back up we go:
