St Joseph’s Social Club, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire - June 2023
“Joeys has been a part of the community for many, many years and most people in the area have a connection to it either personally or through friends and family. It is a safe space for a lot of the older people in our community to be able to socialise in a warm, friendly environment. If Joeys disappears a lot of these people will become alone and isolated. Joeys has been a hub for the community, helping out when needed.”
Unpopular opinion time: I think derp social clubs make for great mooching. I guess I enjoy the combination of social history + possibility of finding old stuff if you look hard enough. Anyway, I’ve done a couple during the past month and it got me thinking about this one from a while back that I never posted. Nothing amazing discovered inside, just the normal piles of trophies, photographs, messing around on the snooker table and abandoned out of date alcohol.
Uneventful exploration as I recall; solo, early on a Sunday morning on a warm summer’s day. I originally tried this with @Gsxrwayne a month or so earlier but some grumpy old men happened to see us climbing over the wall so we bounced because they seemed aggy.
When a 20 deck of L&B would set you back £4...
Beer
‘Joeys’ was due to be demolished for a three storey apartment block - I’m unsure as to whether this has happened or not but last time I was in the area it was still sitting there rotting away, all sheeted up.
