We took at trek over to Canterbury in late 2023 to look at a couple of locations, we had wanted to do St Martins for a while, we heard it was accessible so didn't waste any time
History:-
St Martin's Hospital is a mental health facility on Littlebourne Road in Canterbury, Kent, England. It is managed by the Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust. The hospital, which was designed by William Joseph Jennings and Gray using a compact arrow layout, opened in 1902. The hospital became Canterbury City Mental Hospital in the 1920s and joined the National Health Service as St Martin's Hospital in 1948. After the introduction of Care in the Community in the early 1980s, the hospital went into a period of decline and inpatient services significantly reduced In February 2019 the Trust announced the sale of one of its older wards to Homes England for use as social housing with the proceeds being applied to upgrade newer wards.
The Explore
For those who know it's an interesting location next to a housing estate but also requiring an entry point out of view from everyone.
We started by walking across a field to locate an entry point to what I presume is a private woodland, the walk in the woods then brought us closer to the back of the Hospital. There were many holes in the fence to choose from and entry was gained quickly with the hospital looming in front of us.
I think we walked round the whole perimeter with now open windows or doors before we finally came to a set of double doors and the unmistakable security guard hut about 10 just to the side, so we gently pushed on the doors and with a slight rattle they opened and we were in!
This was our first Hospital/Asylum and we worked out a plan to view all the wards. We probably spent a good couple of hours in there, every section was painted in a different colour and the decay was just starting setting in. On our way out we had a peep in the security hut to find a guard asleep with the TV on, as we turned to leave he woke and like a cartoon he jumped up grabbing his his vis jacket, asking how we managed to get in, we showed him the holes in the fence but told him that we never made it inside the actual building. I think he was embarrassed he was caught asleep so just wanted us gone
Enjoy the pictures!
