Made a quick visit to this coming home from Scotland. Surprisingly considering the hospital has been gone for ages this old boiler house still sits in the woods. It's nice to see the two Lancashire boilers sitting there untouched. It was quite an enjoyable relaxed visit. The hospital which opened in 1907 was the first of its kind in the UK for testing children with TB. The site was built ten miles north of Newcastle by The Poor Children’s Holiday Association. It was successful in treating TB with natural remedies like fresh air and good food, and clean facilities. Aided with the latest medical equipment and procedures.
The boilers would have provided heating and hot water for the hospital I reckon. They were built and installed by Edwin Danks & Company, he was in competition with his dad, brother and uncle who owned another boiler house company. The company was set up in 1968 and was making boilers for the local brick works. They then grew and in 1910 they were taken over by Babcock & Wilson and specialised in Lancashire boilers. The company still exists today though as the years went on they went to specialise in all manner of boilers.
Nice to see the name plate there still in between the brickwork.
