Greetings all, I return once more. Took a bit of a walk today and ended up in Blackburn, opposite the old mill site. The Star Papermill, and its smaller cousin whose name I do not remember, was a major producer of paper from 1879 until it was shut down in 2009. In 2012 the buildings were demolished and backfill started then, just, stopped. The site was abandoned, until recently when a development company purchased it to build houses on. I actually didnt know the name or nature of the site, the two surveyors I met there were most excellent gentlemen in both providing the details and not really caring that I was poking around what is technically private property.
A word of caution: Giant hogweed is present on this site. Its really nasty stuff that basically buggers your skins ability to absorb/deflect UV light to the point an overcast day will cause you to be burnt in under a minute even through a T-shirt, and the effect can last years.

The entrance, you can access this from the smaller site which seems to be publicly accessible. As its probably not going to be here much longer im not going to hide the way in, besides it seems well known locally. 3 posts are missing from the gate and the fence behind is long pushed back.

This appears to have been some form of gate house or the like. Interestingly, it is built over the river.

Inside was largely derelict, the stairs at the end of the bridge went nowhere

The old pumphouse. Well, A old pumphouse.

Detail on the sump

20230424_150120.jpg

And the other side, also the sump I think.

20230424_150148_001.jpg

Most of the site is just this: concrete roads, mounds, and the odd pile of debris

20230424_150327.jpg

And mud. Lots of mud. My boots need cleaning.

20230424_150700.jpg

some old storage tanks for something. Probably chemicals.

20230424_150820.jpg

The old bridge over the river. For the most part the river is underground, although the surveyors I talked to said its going to be diverted when work starts.

"Woop woop, you have been detected, police have been informed"
Excellent news, but im afraid they are too busy chasing down people for saying bad things on social media to care. Alarm did make me jump though.

No idea what this is/was

20230424_152122.jpg

And the other side

20230424_152218.jpg

The other side of the woopwoop zone. I have no idea what the piece of machinery being protected is, but it is the only bit left functioning so I assume its important.

More pipes

20230424_152326.jpg

They did like building things over the river back then.

Part 2, onwards to the end!
20230424_152358.jpg

An initial look at the reservoir

20230424_152445.jpg

Someone has had a fire in the past with waste wood, the nails are all thats left.

20230424_152609.jpg

The full reservoir

20230424_152635.jpg

And the culvert that fed it, its now damaged in some places and does not appear to feed in now, rather there are some holes in the river side.

20230424_153005.jpg

20230424_153024.jpg

And the end. I did consider going through the bridge, but chose not too. No way to cross without getting wet.

20230424_153136.jpg

The culvert gate. Its not fully closed, water still flows through. About a second after I took this photo I realised just how close I had come to the Bad Touch. See those leafy fronds in the photo? Thats immature giant hogweed. The plant has a 2 year lifecycle, in the first year it stays relatively low and puts out the masses of fronds like this, its only in the second year it gains its distinctive massive stalk. The plant exudes its sap readily, and as I mentioned above it can and will bugger you over hard. I got careless and nearly paid for it.

20230424_153211.jpg

Looking back

20230424_153308.jpg

How I missed this clue I do not know. This is a now dead giant hogweed stalk. Im 6'1", stood on a 1'6"ish wall, and its still a foot above me. Most of the site is okay, but the areas around the river are to be watched.

20230424_153942.jpg

The over the river building again.

20230424_154139.jpg

Just as I thought I was done I saw this and decided to check it out.

20230424_154317.jpg

The steps up are fine and stable, but the rails were less so.

20230424_154426.jpg

20230424_154503.jpg

This seems to be a barn of sorts, or a storage shed. Oddly, the timbers inside seem relatively fresh?

20230424_154507.jpg

The tower. I did consider jumping and pulling myself up the ladder, but decided not too, it looked sturdy but I didnt want to risk it. If I go back I might try to get up and see what its like, theres a platform and a doorway.

20230424_154850.jpg

Wideangle across the site. Well, some of it.

20230424_154918.jpg

If anyone knows why this cut away is present in the centre I would be grateful if they could share their knowledge.

20230424_155227.jpg

20230424_155400.jpg

Back looking at the gatehouse from the river exit. The river enters a tunnel back by the other over-river building and comes out here.

20230424_155853.jpg

20230424_155944.jpg

From the smaller site, this arc looked interesting but sadly was not.

20230424_160000.jpg

20230424_160040.jpg

20230424_160059.jpg

And finally of all, the first sites oddly stepped culvert.

I hope this was enough for everyone. If you want to visit then make sure to do so soon, and be aware of the hogweed.
Also, there are deer present, Roe if im not mistaken. I surprised 2 of them.
