After visiting SS Peter and Pauls church earlier in the day, we headed to Stereo. We had tried a couple other places which came to no avail as stated in our SS Peter and Pauls church report; Rex Hotel in Whitley Bay, the house in Gosforth and we also tried the Salvation Army building across from Stereo.

History

This pub started off life under the name of 'Barley Mow pub' was opened as far back as the 1920's. This pub continued to be run under the same name right until 1992. This is when the pub began under a new company with a new name, 'Frog & Firkin'. However, this pub was unsuccessful, not lasting long before once again changing ownership and name. This would move on to be called 'Stereo Nightclub', being the last name that the building would use.

It closed in 2010, and within the following year there would be a fire, which would wipe out the roof, the top floor and some of the second floor. In July of 2015, another fire destroyed the inside of the three-storey property. In September of 2016, there was another fire, which was the latest one to be reported. As of now, the building stands empty with no plans of renovation.

The Explore

The nightclub is situated in between two main roads, so entry into this place had to be quick. We had spotted an entrance; a hole in the bottom floor which I’m happy we didn’t go through for reasons I’ll explain in this report. After making our way through the trees we came onto the balcony, which had a few bits lying around. We managed to get into the building, which brought us onto the main floor.

As we expected, the place had been ruined by fire damage. People before us had been to spruce the place up with graffiti, which gave it a nice touch. In short, the place looked like it was falling apart if it hadn’t already. The roof beams had collapsed inwards, leaving a huge pile of wood in the middle of the floor. There was a hatch behind the bar, which led to a pitch black drop into the floor below. After seeing the drop, we thought we’d explore downstairs.

As we reached the bottom of the stairs, a sign on the door which read carbon dioxide drew our attention and in our best interests we headed back up the stairs. Going back to that hole we spotted on the outside. We’re pretty certain that hole would have led to the floor with carbon dioxide on, so it’s best we didn’t go that route.

We found some stairs which would take us to the upper floor, however it didn’t lead to much. It wasn’t surprising to find the upper floor was burnt to a crisp as well. I mean that normally happens when there’s been a fire. We didn’t feel like climbing to the top floor due to the riskiness of it, so we decided to head on out. It was a good explore, however it’s one I don’t think we’d go back to.
