A local explore for local people! Stirchley has been having some wranglings over supermarkets for years now. Co-Op, who had an existing store, social club and ownership of several key buildings have been pitched against Tesco with their ownership of various waste grounds and also Asda with ownership of other various waste grounds. A couple of years back Tesco won the fight for planning consent and work started on clearing some of the compulsory purchased houses and what not so work on the store proper could begin. This club sits slap bang where the new store is going so as part of the deal it was agreed that Tesco would provide a new club for the members to move too. Various options were touted around and progress has been a bit slower than i expected (to be honest judging by the graffiti some people are a bit pissed off!) but it was eventually agreed (i think more forced!) that the former Co-Op owned TASCOS club building over the road that was forced to close in 2013 and was sitting empty would be refurbished and become the new home for the once local rivals Stirchley United.. Therefore this club now sits empty and all the working men now have to cross the road into the shiny new TASCOS club thats just not called TASCOS anymore. (Dont worry im confused too.)
Anyway, less than a week after they moved the door was off its hinges and there was water spraying around in one of the toilets like you would expect so naturally i took the chance to have a quick look myself.. It had a few nice old touches!
