Visited this one with @AndyK one afternoon on a Scotland trip after losing out on a couple of leads. It was a long shot, but we decided that it would be more than worth it if we managed to get inside. This is easily one of the best mental hospitals I have visited, mostly because it has so many original features remaining, and it seemed that the building had not been modernised massively over the years, compared many other hospitals of this type.
Some very chopped up history:
Sunnyside was originally founded in 1781 as the Montrose Lunatic Asylum, Infirmary & Dispensary. In 1858, the main building currently known as Sunnyside was completed in Hillside, and the previous building was vacated.
As the asylum's patient numbers increased, the site was further and further expanded with the additions of Carnegie House, Howden Villa and Northesk Villa for private patients.
Eventually in 1946 the hospital became under the control of the Easter Regional Hospital Board, and its name was changed from the Royal Asylum of Montrose, to the Royal Mental Hospital of Montrose. In 1962, the hospital was given the name "Sunnyside Royal Hospital".
After 230 years of operation, the hospital was officially closed in 2011 and was the oldest psychiatric hospital in Scotland.
