Swan Lane Mill is just about the most beautiful cotton mill I've ever seen, built at the height of the cotton industry's wealth. The engine hall is vast, once housing a pair of engines to power what is essentially a double mill.
Although the mill is now used for self storage, the engine hall remains as it was when Courtaulds ceased textile production in the 1990's. Despite the replacement of the engines for gas boilers and a substation much of the original features remain.
I love art nouveau tiles, and this place had thousands of them on every wall, most of which were still shining bright 100 years after they were installed...
On a sad note, while the mill is in good repair, the owners have no plans to do anything with the engine hall, so the signs of deterioration that we saw are only going to get worse as the years roll on...
