The Barbican Estate is a residential estate built during the 1960s and the 1970s in the City of London, in an area once devastated by World War II bombings and today densely populated by financial institutions. It contains, or is adjacent to, the Barbican Arts Centre, the Museum of London, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the Barbican public library, the City of London School for Girls and a YMCA (now closed), forming the Barbican Complex. The Barbican Complex is a prominent example of British brutalist architecture and is Grade II listed as a whole with the exception of the demolished Milton Court.
For the last year and beyond I've been taking shelter in here with many others, either when the weather was shite or we just fancied somewhere to chill with some beers. It's the place that just keeps on giving and I'm sure there is more to be seen. Considering the whole site is live it has a pretty relaxed vibe about it, I will no doubt be back down here again. Here's a selection of finds from throughout the complex, some you may have seen before, others perhaps not.
1.
2. Random kids bicycle, but no sign of the kid.....
3. Epic wellies
4. Discarded theatre seats
5. I have no fucking idea
6. The Blueprint room, probably my favourite thing we came across. Hundreds of original blueprints from the 60s being kept in a secret room beneath the arts centre.
7. Original blueprint from 1969
8.
9. Plan showing the layout of the whole Barbican complex, this came in quite handy for finding our way around.
10. This is one of the funniest things down here; a hole that pops up from the tunnels into the middle of a lake, very bizarre!
11. Some of the various tunnels from different sections
