The Benenden Tuberculosis Sanatorium near Tunbridge Wells is a remarkable example of Royal patronage that evolved in a wholly unexpected manner to produce two, not one, imposing sanitoriums at a time when Tuberculosis was known as the White Plague.

The design for the hospital was the winning entry in a design competition held under the patronage of Edward VII to build a new Tuberculosis hospital offering the latest medical treatments developed in Germany and Switzerland on the most advanced lines.

The sanatorium stands on a sunny south-facing slope in the Hamlet of East End, just two miles from the main village of Benenden, with magnificent views over an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Now it’s a mess smashed windows ripped apart etc etc. Was but was a chilled out mooch around on a stormy Tuesday evening with @Stimpakman

For a place built 1907 this has seen many refurbs. The battle to save it is on going I think. Lovely curved design. Great peel. Such history on this piece of land. Would be a shame if it was converted to houses, I think a hotel or such would suit much better

I popped in here after doing the State Theatre, it's honestly pretty rubbish but there's a couple of cool bits amidst the stripped ruined buildings

*Just an update on this place*

We did a revisit last weekend and they are now stripping the Main front building, there was a few skips with a digger and cabins for the workmen, they must have just stopped for the day (or it was rained off) so we were lucky with the timing.

I'm not sure what the plans are for the whole site but only one side has the original features left inside.

Thanks for the update.

A query, what drove the choice of the 'Exploring with' prefix of your name?

Reminds me a lot of Glen O’Dee, a bit plainer perhaps but similar design and same sort of era.
