Transporter is a culverted section of Batley Beck (also known as Dewsbury Beck on older maps) that outfalls into the River Calder. This Dewsbury section of the beck was definitely culverted pre-1888, as that's the oldest map I could find of the area, and the beck was still (in)visible in the same places. Beyond that, and the fact that it floods sometimes, that's all I've got I'm afraid. People don't seem to care much for curating the history of culverts, it seems (except for on here obviously)...
This visit was done whilst passing through the area. I dropped in upstream and walked to the outfall, taking pictures on my way back. There's not very much in the way of transitions or features here, but the stonework is good and it gets a thumbs up for being a good wander.
The outfall was the deepest section of the whole thing, didn’t bother poking my head outside as it wasn’t worth the dunking, having stayed dry for the whole of the downstream walk.
Heading upstream, brick reenforced with concrete at the sides.
Bit of spraycrete reenforcement...
This was the largest section I think, in height and in width. No stooping necessary on this whole thing, which makes a change...
The split to the left has been blocked off at some point.
Shadders...
Might’ve been tempted to head down the sidepipe if I wasn’t on my own, and if I hadn’t already had enough by now...
After a short open section the culvert continues...
And back out...
Futher upstream is the Batley section, called 'Monument'. I'll deal with that one in another thread, at some point.
