History

Hidden within woodland just north of Mathersgrave, west of Bracken field near Matlock, Derbyshire, lies the crumbling ruins of Trinity Chapel which dates back to the 1500s.
Until a new parish church was built at the other end of Brackenfield in 1856, Trinity Chapel was the main place of worship for the village. Women would all sat on the North side of the Chapel, with men sitting on the South side during service.
By the 17th century, the location of the chapel was considered inconvenient and there were calls for a new church nearer the centre of the village. However, this did not happen for another two hundred years, until Gladwin Turbutt, the last Victorian squire in Derbyshire, donated the site for a new parish church. The chapel was finally abandoned in 1857 following the investiture of the new Brackenfield Church. The building was granted Grade II listed on the 31st January 1967. Presently, the chapel lies in ruins, covered in moss and is slowly crumbling away.

The Explore

Explored on the hottest weekend of the year back in July this lovely, crumbling relic provided some much needed shelter from the blistering heat.
Finding the old chapel was easy enough, however what with it being out in the middle of no where finding somewhere to park the car was a completely different ball game .
So we literally just had to abandon it on the side of the road with a 10min walk to the chapel.
Once we had arrived we just couldn't believe how beautiful it was, It's a stunning structure, and must have looked magnificent back when it was in full use. It's very slippy with the moss, and very unstable in places.
Its clearly well looked after by someone or just not visited that often as there was no rubbish or any attempts of vandalism.
