Trinity Square Tower Crane, Gateshead, October 2012
Comedil CCT 561-16 Tower Crane (78.4m)
Visited with AJ and lucid(in part )
Trinity Square is a development close to Gateshead Quays that will eventually include everything from student accomodation and offices to retails units, restaurants and a supermaket.
This is a very busy site, and after one failed attempt at one of two smaller cranes on the site due to construction workers working up a height until a ridiculous time, we went back for this newer and higher addition to the site which will aid the construction of a 46m hotel planned for the site.
Work started in October 2010 and is set to finish in August 2013.
Even on this occasion it was far from straight forward and after a bit of a wait for our moment to enter the site, we made our way through the heavy plant equipment and rubble to the base of the crane. With active and unpredictable security patrols, we waited for what must have been close the 2 hours at the base of the crane for the right time to go.
After an hour of lying quietly in dark, lucid was about to burst. Literally. With no portaloo on site and claiming it "wasn't that type of shit" he could hold or drop on site somehow, he had to bail, providing useful info that security was out of his hut on the way to drop his arse.
Eventually we got impatient and decided to start the climb, only to notice security wandering past torch in hand... So waited some more inside the base. Eventually getting impatient again, we climbed the first level and saw that he was back in his hut with the door closed.
This was my first crane, and the pictures haven't come out as sharp as I'd have liked. Lesson for the day; use shorter exposures up windy cranes.
Some great views of Newcastle Quayside and the rest of the city from here, including The Tyne Bridge and Sage Gateshead.
Posted in non public as we'd like to get back to the site as it develops some more.
AJ reading an article about "Britain teen sex slaves" in the lovely warm driver cab
Hopefully the first of many, Cheers for looking
