Welcome to Tropical Wings Zoo - A World of Wildlife, proud to be one of the newest interactive zoo attractions to be found anywhere within the UK, aiming to be the best small family zoo in the country!

Come rain or shine - whatever the weather and whatever your age - there is always something for you to, "see, learn, discover and do" here at Tropical wings Zoo.

We would like to share with you a brief history of the zoo, to tell you where we've come from, how we've have grown what we intend to do as we head into the future! And why in particular, we feel so passionately - that all children should have physical access to animals in order to foster a better understanding of wildlife and the natural world around them!

For this reason it is important that we provide safe, knowledgeable animal husbandry for all of the animals within our care. We are proud to employ well-trained, highly qualified Keepers with a wealth of experience, knowledge and expertise at their fingertips. Specialist Animal Keepers and Education Officers work closely together to make sure that we offer the very highest standards of animal care to ensure that we deliver effective Conservation Education to all our visitors. To accomplish this, we offer many daily scheduled Keeper talks, feeding sessions and demonstrations in order to inform the public as to the many ways in which we can all contribute to conservation - whether it is on an international level - or closer to home, in your own garden at home!

So who are we?We are an all weather family focused attraction based in South Woodham Ferrers, in the heart of Essex, England - and we would like you to know what we have to offer, should you decide to spend a day with us here at Tropical Wings Zoo.

We have plenty of Wings for you to choose from, as our name suggests we have wings of every shape, colour, shade, size and description within the zoo. As we are home to one of the finest butterfly houses to be found in UK, as well as having a superb collection of birds, including many species of parrot.

Tropical Wings, which opened in 2000, has grown from being predominately a butterfly house to a zoo, with a range of animals including wallabies, frogs and lemurs.

In November 2017 it was announced in local papers that this place was closing in a months time for good
(from essex live)
Tropical Wings Zoo in South Woodham Ferrers is closing for good next month after the owners have decided to retire due to ill health.

A statement posted on the Tropical Wings Facebook page this afternoon (November 14), written by the zoo owners Dennie and Rona Strong, confirmed that the zoo will close for good in December.

The statement said: "It is with great sadness that we will be closing our wonderful zoo forever on December 3.

"We have been on a fantastic journey with what has become a business to be very proud of, but sadly, due to ill health, the time has come for us to retire.

Finally closed its doors to the public on 4th December 2017 and all the animals were found new homes

cant find any info on future plans for this place is not up for sale and no active planning permissions

The explore
Have had my eye on this place for while being local finally decided to check it out
couple of us headed down around 10am one Sunday morning after getting past the metal fence we found the whole place deserted and overgrown
spent a couple hours in here and didn't see a sole
all the animals have gone and they have kindly left all the cages and buildings unlocked the only thing that was locked up was the restaurant
the place is littered with cctv cameras and the power is still on but luckily none of the alarms were on
another successful explore this place was exactly as i remember it

Well covered. The place still looks brand new.

This is the only info i can find on this place

From the planning history - Prior to 1979 it was a plant nursery – “Four Acre Nursery”

In 1979 it became a garden centre, still called “Four Acre Nursery”

In 1999 part of an existing glasshouse became a tropical butterfly and reptile house and bird aviary.

There doesn’t seem to be any application to turn it into a full-on zoo, but I think that happened around 2002.

In 2008 there was an application for "internal refurbishment to existing zoo"

Visited this recently, two different halves separated by a metal gate we managed to open, one half is mainly animal enclosures but other side has restaurants, cafe, butterfly house, parks and gift shop.

However from what I didn’t realise is I bumped into an enclosure with goats, another with parrots and ravens, cameras are active due to infrared (at night) is a part is still privately used, I heard it’s owned now by local rivalry marsh farm

Was amazing to see it as I did as a kid, respected the area, closed everything we opened on way out however easy access
