So here we go, my first report
History For over 100 years the Greenwich peninsula was dominated by gasworks, steel works, shipbuilding and other industrial facilities. In the recent years it has been the heart of a massive regeneration project to turn an industrial wasteland to a residential "village" inspired from Manhattan and Hong Kong. What was once an urbex heaven (and there are some amazing reports/photos on here as a testament of that), is now being converted into flats.
As part of the booming regeneration since 2000, many investors were attracted to the potential of the area and funded the rapid construction of new shopping areas, residential buildings, schools and hotels. The vast majority of projects were completed ahead of time due to the funding that was available, but one development still remains under construction more than a decade later. It's the hotel on Tunnel Avenue. I must have driven past it more times than I can remember, but recently as I was stuck in the Blackwall Tunnel traffic (fellow drivers, please feel my frustration here) I begun to wonder what is hidden behind the net covering the scaffolding. So a quick search when I got home and ta-da! the "forgotten hotel" emerged in the results.
Exploring It all started with a walk around the area to see the hotel up close. It emerged in the horizon mysteriously wrapped in a white sheet around the scaffolding that was ripped in every corner from the wind after all the years of being there. I found the main entrance on a side street, where the netting had been blown off and one could see the rusting scaffolding forgotten there over the years. The side was surrounded by a metal fence with spikes on top and a quick glimpse in the corners was enough to notice the red glow of the cameras. Must have been my lucky day though cause a truck was parked right outside, so with a bit of climbing and a couple jumps, I was in! As I was already on the 3rd floor, I decided to climb up first and explore on my way down. I was so eager to admire the view and oh I was right!
Had to stop to give my arms a rest as most ladders were too unsteady to climb, so most of my way up was done from the outside.
Once on the top, I had to stand and admire the view! Decided to play with my camera settings and try out that new tripod. A good friend who I used to explore with used to say that when we explore we are ghosts; someone might catch a glimpse of us, but we are never seen and nobody can know that we were there. So this is me, the ghost of the forgotten hotel for tonight.
Think after the climb, a beer was well deserved with this view. A couple sips and off I was again, beginning the descend.
The highlight of the night. Managed to capture a star falling in the sky!
I was the first guest of room 302. "The bed was not very comfortable, but at least the view was good." Tripadvisor
The corridors were dark. The lights of the passing cars were filling them with light and then the darkness and quiet returned.
The restaurant/bar area. No beer or wine found unfortunately.
The front desk. Might be a bit too early for my check-in.
Having finished my exploration I realised that all ground floor doors were alarmed. Not sure if the system was working or not, as there was no electricity, but didn't want to chance it. So my way out involved a little bit more effort than what I had hoped for. After some more crawling, climbing, jumping and running, I was out! Had the last couple sips of my beer and started my walk back.
Thanks for reading and as it's my very first report any feedback is welcome
