Visited last year on a euro trip to the French / German borders. Quite a large limestone quarry sitting right on the border, used as an underground Factory by the Nazi's during World War 2 to produce wheel bearings for tanks. Vague history here:
As with all French underground workings, there is a nice array of abandoned and smashed up cars for us photographers to enjoy.
The underground relocation S is a former lime pit with a floor area of 23,000 square meters and a probable usable area for the underground relocation of 10,000 square meters. In such a plant it was possible to relocate important war industry underground, so war material could continue to be produced protected from bomb attacks and was used to produce gears and gears for tanks.
