MidKent College had two sites on City Way - the northern City Way Centre (which opened in 1968), and the southern Horsted Centre (which opened in 1954). Both sites closed in 2009, when the college relocated to a larger campus in Gillingham. I visited the southern Horsted Centre site with Catullus.
We had a nice relaxed few hours strolling around the site. The only sign of any security was a hut with the sound of a generator running and a washing line outside with socks etc hanging on it. There seemed to be no one around, but halfway through our visit, we noticed that the generator had been switched off – it appeared that someone was around.
After another hour or so, we turned a corner whilst looking for an entry point to a building and found ourselves behind a guy in hi-vis. We didn’t think he’d seen us and so we legged it in the opposite direction. We stood at the opposite end of the campus for a minute discussing what to do – we were thinking about carrying on exploring on the basis that he hadn’t seen us and because to exit the site we would have to go past him. Plus, we hadn’t been in the refectory yet, and I wanted to see that. But, another guy suddenly turned the corner and found us – the look on his face showed that he had no idea we were there. He appeared to just be taking a jog around the site! He followed us off site (while telling us that usually there are dogs there), past the other guy we’d seen in the hi-vis (who looked bemused as we waved at him!).
In total, we only managed to see block 1, block 2, block 5, block 8, the round theatre, and the library. So there’s still plenty to go back and see.
