The line opened in 1883 and went from Valletta to the old capital of Mdina stopping off at a few other settlements between the two cities. It didn't run for long and was disused by the end of 1931. Mostly what is still left of the old railway is in the 2 remaining tunnels on the island. The railway cut the journey time from over 3 hours down to 25 minutes between Valletta and Mdina. The line had only a couple of sections underground and while over on the island we managed to fit in seeing them both. Its not a bad wander if you don't mind scorpions and the crazy heat where the dust sticks to you!
