An oldie but still a goodie. Myself and junior have been up this several times over the past 18 months or so on rambles along the outer dock walls, but never bothered to take many photos.
Noticing that is was open again I visited early one morning on the way somewhere else to have a closer look.
History. Built in 1848 by Hartley based on an 1846 design by Hardwick https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victoria_Tower,_Liverpool and https://web.archive.org/web/20070808165450/http://www.liverpoolworldheritage.com/stanleydock.asp/
“This spectacular piece of showmanship is primarily a handsome clock and bell tower not only giving time to neighbouring docks and arriving and departing ships but also ringing out high tide and warning notes….it also originally incorporated a Pier Master's flat.”
According to Pevsner “It is all ham, but it tells of the commercial pride of the decades.”
Previous reports. Listed here since the naming varies. All good reports, although it beats me why people do this thing at night.
As with most of the well known Liverpool sites, there seems to have been a flurry of activity around 2010.

This external taken from the Collingwood Dock one evening. The little castellated building on the left is the the Dock Master’s Office - it’s been tinned up for years, but there are some interiors in one of georgie’s reports.
These externals were taken on the way out - the early morning sun had just broken through after a shower which is why the lighting is a bit odd.
Interior photos go from the ground floor up, camera in one hand, torch in the other as usual. The first three (residential) floors feature green T&G wood panelling and fireplaces.
The ceilings have curved iron beams with brick vaulting and are reminiscent of Hartley’s warehouses. The whole place is home to many friendly pigeons.
Every time I see this wooden thing with curved projection on either side I wonder what it is - looks like something out of a mill which once housed a fan.
Out onto the parapet for an early morning view of the city and a clock face.
Clock mechanism with its six-fold bevel - always seem to have trouble getting decent photos of clock workings.
Not too obvious from the photo on the left, but the wire rope from the main drum goes over pulleys on the ceiling so that the weight would have hung down an odd shaped wooden flue (right) which extends right down to the ground floor.
Floor-level holes in this flue can been in some of the pictures of rooms above.
There used to be the remains of a bell hanging from the beam, gone by tallginge’s report in 2016.
Six iron chimneys (two are out of shot) presumably for six fireplaces.
View of the north docks - Nelson, Bramley-Moore, Sandon, Huskisson, Canada, and (just about) Langton.
Another view of the city, Clarence Graving Docks in the foreground.
A view from a previous visit - the start of the round the world Clipper 2017-18 Race.
