1. The History
Not a vast amount of info on this World War II Heavy anti-aircraft battery that lies in the sight of Castle Hill in Huddersfield. The site has two heavy anti-aircraft gun emplacements, a control building, ammunition stores and several other notable buildings. There is also a well-preserved contemporary road up to the site.
The site of at Stirley Knoll was listed as unarmed in 1942, and prior to that was manned by 294 Battery of the 96th Royal Artillery Battery in 1940.
2. The Explore
In the area and got a bit of a thing for gun batteries at the moment. A well-preserved site and easy access. Quite a bit to see but the ammo store was particularly boggy and I didn’t haver my wellies on. Worth a half-an-hour nosy or so.
