History:
Following the Second World War, like many European cities, Leicester needed rebuilding. Being a major hub in hosiery and footwear, as well as being close to Birmingham, Coventry and Nottingham, Leicester took a battering. In the rebuilding of Leicester, improvements to the road system and more houses were made. At this time, Thurmaston was a village outside of Leicester, it is now more of a suburb.
In the 1950’s, a ring road was proposed. It was built in the early 1960’s and called the A563, or Troon Way on the section passing between Rushey Mead and Thurmaston. During the construction of Troon Way, a storm relief drain was built beneath after flooding and the construction of Thorn Lighting (Now a Sainsbury's). This takes excess water from Melton Brook(at the Humberstone Lane/Troon Way Roundabout) to the River Soar in Watermead Park.

i was visiting Leicester to attend a work training course and although Leicester was hit hard during the war, research showed a lack of my favourite explores...deep shelters. So what does one do in Leicester with a few hours to kill ?......Drainz with @Punk of course !! (nice meeting you mate)
after parking up, wadering up and a brief stroll (with some odd looks from passers by) we were at the brook.
my initial thoughts were along the lines of "hmm this looks stoopy" (luckily it doesn't stay that low once a hundred yards or so inside it opens up to the RCP).
we cracked a safety brew each and headed inside
onto the pics (which are in order as we went, not the flow direction)
The end of the culvert just after the outfall
Just inside the stoopyness (bit blurry this pic)
Around the corner looking at the RCP
Looking up the RCP, the echo down this is amazing !!
Further along after being taught the drainer walk
Then stopped briefly to snap a drainers shot
More roundness but this time with stripes (The Tiger)
A leaky side pipe and Punk shining in the darkness
The infall, gutted i wasn't able to sign the guest list but hey ho
Looking out of the grated overflow entrance
i enjoyed it very much and can safely say i will be heading in more drains in the future, cheers for the tour Punk, you made it a very funny explore.
cheers for looking
