A weird little voyeuristic ‘explore’, particularly since I have no interest in cars. Anyway, on New Year’s Eve a fire in a carpark opposite the Liverpool Echo Area destroyed about 1400 cars in a domino-effect type blaze. Luckily nobody was seriously hurt and several dogs and about 80 horses were rescued. The fire is said to have been started on the second level (by a Range Rover Discovery or a Land Rover, accounts differ) and the resulting insurance bill is estimated at 20 M.
When I walked past here the other day it was noticeable that people were taking pictures of the singed carpark with their phones, so I decided to have a look inside.
Outside from opposite the Arena.
The alley at the back showing some fire damage to the cladding of the neighbouring block of flats. Although I’ve parked in this carpark a few times I hadn’t realised that the ground floor under the first ramp is mostly occupied by rows of horse boxes. There happened to be an equestrian event on in the Arena at the time - the rescued horses came from down here.
Cars on the first floor were mostly undamaged, the devastation starts on the second floor and gets worse up to the fourth. The heat was intense enough to spall the concrete floors, leaving only the steel reinforcing mesh in places, with falling debris further damaging cars below.
A car abandoned on its way somewhere and the remains of another - this one presumably had an alloy body.
Quite a few survivors in odd corners and at the ends of lines on the lower levels.
There were about 15 or so cars on the roof level, mostly OK as far as I could see. I didn’t go out and take pictures in case there were cameras up here that still worked. Instead here’s a picture from a news article in the Liverpool Echo, taken from the top of the Liverpool Wheel (the thing you can see in the background of the first pic below).
At the moment it’s not clear whether people with ever get their undamaged cars back, along with their possessions (wallets, phones etc.) which is why this report is NP.
