Carmel College is a Jewish boarding school (the only one in Europe at the time) that was closed in 1997 due to lack of funds and bad management. The distinctive Synagogue, Amphitheatre, and Dining Hall, designed by local architect Thomas Hancock, are Grade II listed buildings; as are the Julius Gottlieb gallery and the Boathouse, which were designed by Sir Basil Spence.
On arrival, we noticed that the Manor door was open, but a couple of security guys came soon after and nailed it shut. But we'll be back...
We managed to find a way into the Synagogue, The Gallery, and the block containing the Art and Jewish studies departments. The Synagogue was pretty empty, but the beautiful stained glass windows made up for it! A lot of the rooms in the Art and Jewish studies block had been stripped, or had suffered water damage, but there was still plenty to look at (especially the old artwork left behind by the students, and the mountains of books...)
This is a first report... Hope it’s okay :P
