Being as the weather was pretty good today,I thought I'd have a wander round the RSPB reserve at Fair Ings which is close to where I live, when I came across the Castleford Railway Viaduct.

Here's what I disscovered about it after a bit of googling.

This bowstring girder structure with lengthy approach spans carried its railway for 280 yards across the River Aire. It sits at the southern end of the 6.3 mile connection between Garforth and Castleford. Today it appears rather the worse for wear with corrosion and fractures along its length. This decline has occurred largely within the past ten years.

According to a local, the viaduct is destined to become a walkway. Considerable remedial work would be needed if that was to come to fruition

Original Company
Leeds Castleford & Pontefract Railway (LCR&JR)
Taken over prior to opening in 1878 by the North Eastern Railway Co
Open for passengers 12th August 1878
Open for Freight 8th April 1878
Closed for Passengers 22nd June 1951
Closed for Freight between Ledston and Garforth 14th July 1969
Between Castleford East Junction and Ledston 6th June 1998.

Cant believe they were running coal trains over this structure only fourteen years ago.Its in a right state!
