The Clayton tunnel is 1057 yds long,
forming part of the great northern railway between Queensbury (west) & Bradford (east).
The west portal lies in a steep cutting which has been filled in, except last 20 yds
is in average condition with a brick wall & a single access door.
There's 2 air shafts (both capped) a third & 2 thirds of the way through the tunnel,
there's no refuges through the tunnel.
The roof is made of bricks & the walls are made of stone,
the floor is water & debris free except the chimney remains beneath the 2 airshafts.
The west portal is buried, nothing remains of it at street level.
The tunnel opened 1st May 1878 (freight) & 14th October 1878 (passengers),
closed 23rd May 1955 (passengers) & 11th November 1963 (freight).
A collapse from roof to floor blocking the whole tunnel, occurred at 22 chains.
With the west portal filled in & the collapse blocking the whole tunnel,
thus forming a 484 yds sealed section.
During 2012, a routine inspection of the tunnel by 2 maintenance staff came across a cannabis plantation.
Informing the police they removed the plantation leaving the equipment behind, which remains today.
