I have always wanted to see haddon Tunnel so a few years back as we were passing it we made a little visit to it. Making our way down the embankment we found the north portal what was blocked up, but luckily had a convenient hole in the wall. Luckily as well it was not flooded like it is sometimes in parts.
The construction of the tunnel Bagan in 1860 and consisted of three parts. One cut and cover section at 490 yards, a central tunnel section at 350 yards and another cut and cover at 220 yards. The construction of the tunnel was part of the Buxton branch line for the midland railway. The tunnel went through the grounds of Haddon hall and the tunnel was built to hide the tunnel from the estate. The tunnel has five ventilation shafts which are still open now. During construction a section collapsed killing five workers. The railway company paid each family £100 each which would equate to £9,639 in today's money.
The railway line was under scrutiny during the Beeching cuts, and in June 1968 the last train passed through the tunnel. Their has been talks of reopening the tunnel, but the Haddon estate are very opposed to it.
