During World War Two the horse racing course at Haydock Park near Ashton was used for storage by the USAAF. Between June 1944 and the 3rd of October 1945 Haydock Park became an associated base for RAF Burtonwood, It was actually activated by the Americans on the 13th November 1944 as AAF Station 530 DET L Supply Division and was manned by 5 Officers and 175 enlisted personnel.
